Project Description

Nutrient loading from agricultural activities is a considerable environmental stressor to the Suwannee River and Estuary. With this program the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) will oversee and work with the Suwannee River Partnership to build on a successful pilot program to improve irrigation system efficiency similar to the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Natural Resources Conservation Service's (USDA-NRCS) Agricultural Water Enhancement Program. These irrigation system improvements will conserve water and energy, as well as reduce nutrient loading to water resources. Deliverables associated with this program include a list of enrollees, cost-share agreements with farmers, monitoring data, outreach and education workshops, educational written materials, and field-based BMP demonstrations.
