Project Description

This project focuses on the Prairie Pothole Region, west of the James River in South Dakota. This habitat includes the Missouri Coteau, one of the most important waterfowl breeding areas in North America. This grant will permanently protect 3,651 acres of wetlands and adjacent grasslands to be managed as Game Production Areas. Funds will also be used to restore and enhance 4,759 acres of temporary, seasonal, and semi-permanent wetlands currently at risk of conversion to cropland. The grasslands are native prairie and provide important nesting habitat for numerous species of migratory birds, while increasing water quality.
