Project Description

An artificial reef site (Outer Continental Shelf Block High Island HI-A-424) located about 67 miles south-southeast of Galveston, Texas was created by sinking a 371-foot long ship named The Kraken in 2017. The ship is located within an 80-acre permitted reef site, in waters that are approximately 135 feet deep. The ship was cleaned of hazardous substances to meet United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) criteria and passed all required federal and state inspections, including EPA, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), and United States Coast Guard (USCG). This Early Restoration project funded a portion of the costs to implement this project. Additional funds from donations to the TPWD Texas Artificial Reef Program were used to complete the project. This project has successfully enhanced recreational fishing and diving opportunities.
