Project Description

Trawl fisheries account for the greatest percentage of sea turtle bycatch for Kemp's ridley, loggerhead and green sea turtle populations in the Gulf of Mexico and are estimated to take over 5,000 turtles annually. A Turtle Excluder Device (TED) can reduce sea turtle bycatch mortality by 97% if installed properly in trawl nets. NFWF will work with NOAA Fisheries and LA DWF to expand this program to include more fishermen and increase the opportunities for a successful conversion to use of TEDs.
