Project Description

Phase II of the South Dakota Habitat Legacy project will restore and enhance wetland and grassland habitats on 180 tracts of private land throughout the project area. Specifically, 1,000 cropland acres will be restored to grassland, 1,470 wetland acres will be enhanced with beneficial grazing systems, 100 acres of drained wetlands will be restored and 19,530 grassland acres will be enhanced with beneficial grazing systems. In addition, a 334 acre tract of priority grassland nesting habitat will be afforded permanent easement protection. The project will benefit a wide range of waterfowl, shorebirds, waterbirds and passerines including Mallard, Blue-Winged Teal, Marbled Godwits, Upland Sandpipers and Grasshopper Sparrows.
